Newark is a vibrant community of 30,000 located in New Castle County, approximately 12 miles southwest of Wilmington. It is home to the University of Delaware. Rich in history and tradition, Newark was founded in 1694 and chartered on April 13, 1758 by King George II of England. Education has always played a significant role in the history of Newark. A grammar school that was founded in 1743 by Francis Alison in Pennsylvania was moved to Newark in 1765 and became the Newark Academy. Among the first graduates were three signers of the Declaration of Independence: Thomas McKean, George Reed and James Smith. The state granted a charter to a new school in 1833, which was called Newark College. Newark Academy and Newark College joined together the following year, becoming Delaware College. In 1921, the school was renamed the University of Delaware. Newark is a very walkable town with a central area consisting of the University and Main Street and surrounding residential neighborhoods. Much of the city revolves around the University and its students - thus, in the summertime, its much quieter. Although a lively town in a densely populated county, Newark contains over 500 acres of parkland and open space. To the south is Iron Hill Park, to the west is Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area and to the north is White Clay Creek State Park and White Clay Creek Preserve. These parks provide hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and other recreational opportunities.

Newark Weather & Climate

Northern Delaware, which consists of New Castle County, is generally considered to have a humid subtropical climate. There is some debate as to whether the extreme northern portion of the county is humid subtropical or warm continental. The main difference being whether winter temperatures are cold enough to support a fixed period of snow cover each year. Most areas of northern Delaware experience relatively mild winters because the mountains of Pennsylvania protect it from harsh, cold winds. Summers are warm and humid with thunderstorms, although not as hot as the southeastern part of the state. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state; however, the north and southeast receive the most precipitation. Delaware is a tiny state, only 96 miles long and from 9 to 35 miles across. Almost all of the state is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and therefore the effects of the ocean moderate the climate. Severe storms, such as hurricanes are rare in northern Delaware and when they do occur, plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
